kuala lumpur: new years in new surroundings

following on from our arrival in kuala lumpur we decided to focus most of the first day on trying to get ourselves better from these horrendous colds we seem to have developed. we headed up towards the pool and bar of the hotel which are on the rooftop. the roof has the most amazing views i've ever seen. you can see a lot of the city's landmarks like the KL tower and petronas twin towers.

the pool is infinity pool which features some rather lovely views too and just feels incredibly luxurious.

so, after our day of resting we were ready to celebrate the new year in style where "jamie (no show) vinall" (as he is known due to our 24hr delay in arriving) had reserved us a table at the finest poolside diner available for a sumptuous new year's eve special bbq buffet. with a free glass of sangria thrown in, no less.

on new years day we got up early and decided to go out sightseeing. first up, and essential on any kuala lumpur visitor's itinerary, the petronas towers. these iconic towers certainly were a sight, it was a bright sunny day and they glistened in the sunlight. while we were there we had a stroll around the gardens and fountains at the towers and had a quick look (just a look with these wallets!) around the high end shops in the shopping mall.

following on from the towers we got the train to the masjid jamek which is one of the oldest mosques in kuala lumpur. the mosque was closed for prayer so we walked around the outside and made our way to merdeka square (merdeka means freedom - we learnt today!). we went to a gallery which gave a history of the city and provided us with some new information. it was a sweltering hot day so by this point we were melting a little but made our way to the botanical gardens and into the butterfly sanctuary.

we figured we should get some rest after all that sightseeing so we got back to the hotel, had a quick dip and finished the day with foot massages for our weary feet! now 24hrs left in kuala lumpur before heading to melbourne on thursday night. we haven't seen nearly enough of this city but we've got a good wish list of things to do should come back here again.
